Info on Shoreline rankings for the Socio-economic Sensitivity index (SESI) for Portugal, Madeira and Morocco:

The determination of the SESI absolute values previously mentioned (1-5) is a result of the consideration of different socio-economic criteria assuming different relative weights to each one:

Tourism

Fisheries / aquaculture

Recreational activities

Population

Relative weight in socioeconomic index (%)

6.18%

41.24%

2.58%

50%

The different criteria for computing the SESI will be explained in detail:

  1. Population

The population that lives in coastal parishes, obtained from INE (gathered in Censos 2011).

  1. Tourism

The number of bed accommodations / 1000 inhabitants, for the associated municipality.

  1. Fisheries and Aquaculture

The weighted combination of three different indicators:

  • Number of fishermen registered in the associated port / 1000 inhabitants (relative weight = 40%)

  • Fish captured and unloaded in the port (in €) / 1000 inhabitants in the associated (relative weight = 40%)

  • Aquaculture and saliculture production in the associated NUTS 2 region (in €) / 1000 inhabitants (relative weight = 20%)

  1. Recreational Activities

The weighted combination of two different indicators:

  • Number of marina berths / moorings for recreational vessels / 1000 inhabitants in the associated municipality (relative weight = 50%)

  • Index of bathing waters importance (relative weight = 50%)

The determination of index of bathing waters importance is obtained from the combination of other three indicators, using an equal proportion for each of them (relative weight = 33.3%):

  • existence of blue flag in the coastline segment (0/1)

  • existence of beach concession in the coastline segment (0/1)

  • aptitude for nautical sports in the coastline segment (0/1)

Info on Shoreline rankings for the Ecologic Sensitivity index (ECSI) for Portugal, Madeira and Morocco:

  • Maximum vulnerability (ranking = 5): when any special marine protected area is associated to that coastline (NATURA 2000, natural parks, natural reserves);

  • no vulnerability (ranking = 1): when no special marine protected area is associated.

Info on Shoreline rankings for the Environmental Sensitivity Index and Ecological Sensitivity Index for Canary Islands:

The Environmental Sensitivity Index Rankings (scaled from 1 to 5) are obtained by the maximum of sub-areas Coastline Sensitivity Indices (shoreline type value) and the Ecological Sensitivity Index Rankings (scaled from 1 to 5) are obtained by the maximum of sub-areas Ecological Indices (Protected space value), according to the following tables:

The Socio-economic Index Rankings (scaled from 1 to 5) are obtained by the maximum value of multiple criteria:

  • Population density

  • Tourism

  • Aquaculture and fishing

  • Industry

These socio-economic criteria are ranking as follows:
